The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.



The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday, by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'evElkin and Moshe Lion, the Mayor. Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also in attendance.

Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the vision of altering the way of transport throughout Jerusalem. Elkin stated that the new tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved throughout the various areas. The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek It is situated to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line, which connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
