נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was constructed as a part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which runs through the capital.
The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The tunnel's official opening ceremony which measures 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.
Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination due to its glorious past. Elkin explained that the modern tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and incorporates modern day tourism. "The launch of the tunnel project is a further part of the development of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem as well as its development into a dazzling city that is attractive to all types of audiences in Israel and throughout the world."
Elkin who, through his ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that the Jerusalem Municipality's ministry "invests hundreds to millions of shekels each year in the development all aspects Jerusalem's tourists and in the development and operation of new attractions, ventures and attractions which connect the rich past of Jerusalem to its future". Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the vision to transform the idea of transport in Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes within the city, as well as the ones that will be constructed within the various neighborhood. It is designed to encourage bicycling within the city's residents and promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.
