The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.

It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is located within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. While the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half a km from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its glorious past. Elkin explained that today, in addition to its historical treasures the tunnel construction project incorporates modern-day tourism. "The opening of the tunnel is an additional element of the progress of Jerusalem and it's transformation into an attractive tourist destination for all types in Israel and around the world.

Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the growth of all aspects Jerusalem's tourists and in the development and operation of innovative tourist attractions, ventures, and activities which connect the rich past of Jerusalem's eternal city to its future". I would like to invite cyclists to ride a secure and modern route that takes the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 to the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the idea to change the way of thinking and transport in Jerusalem. "The new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will be connected to the many cycle paths already in the city. These will be paved within the diverse areas.  נווה פריצקי The aim is to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just some of the ongoing works to ensure that the tunnel is secure for all seasons.

It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation spots, including Ein Kerem, the Biblical zoo, aquarium and the Ein Kerem neighborhood.
